When Mattel started out production it manufactured picture frames & dollhouse accessories. It then made acquisitions of smaller toy companies and in 1966 an undersized maker of plastic lunchboxes of low grade came under its wings.

In the year 1987, Mattel set out with the distribution of the Nintendo Entertainment System in European nations. Then with the passage of time Nintendo started is operations in Europe and began NES distribution.

Mattel had the rights to sell NES goods in Canada. But due to a court ruling, it was declared that in the entire area of North America the complete NES line would be solely distributed by Nintendo & Mattel was removed from the co-branding process.
